Canadian gold miner Centerra Gold has suspended operations at its Langeloth metallurgical facility in Pennsylvania, US, following an explosion that injured four people late on Thursday.

The company said on Friday that the incident occurred at about 6:15 pm Eastern Time at the Langeloth facility near Pittsburgh and was caused by an uncontrolled mixture of chemicals that led to an uncontained chemical reaction adjacent to the acid plant.

No fatalities were reported. Two contractors were taken to hospital with injuries, while two employees were taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

Centerra said there was currently no indication of a significant environmental release resulting from the incident.

The relevant regulatory agencies and authorities have been notified, and the company has temporarily halted operations at the facility.

Centerra said it is assessing the extent of the damage and the likely duration of the shutdown.

The Langeloth facility forms part of Centerra’s molybdenum business unit in the US and Canada.
